Warning! This program contains blasphemy and other material
that may be offensive to just about anyone. It should be treated like
an R-rated movie, and is not recommended for children.
Use this program at your own risk. There is no warranty, express

damages from its use, including excommunication and/or brain damage. If
you do not agree to these terms, you may not use this software.
This software is copyrighted material distributed as shareware. It
may be freely distributed if unaltered and complete. You are granted a
limited license to run this program 30 days for evaluation purposes, then
it must be registered.
Please see the file "register.doc" for information on how to
register this game. Registration is only $10, and includes a copy of
the Evangelist Wars Hint Book and Cheat Guide.
Registered users of Evang 1.1 or 2.0 may upgrade to 3.0 for only
$3. Please see "upgrade.doc" for details.
Upgrading from Version 2.0:
If you are currently running version 2.0 of Evangelist
Wars, you can upgrade the game in progress if you follow these
instructions carefully:
Set up a new directory for Evang 3.0 and copy the distribution
files into it.
From your new game directory, run the batch file 2TO3.BAT,
specifying the pathname of the version 2.0 directory on the command line.
Do not use a trailing backslash.
For instance, if Evangelist Wars 2.0 was running in the
directory \bbs\doors\evang and you put the version 3.0 files in
\bbs\doors\evan3, you would do the following:
cd\bbs\doors\evan3
2to3.bat \bbs\doors\evang
The 2to3.bat batch file will run reset for you, then copy the
files that it needs from your version 2.0 game. Be sure to set up
your BBS or mailer so that it runs nightly maintenance on the new version.
Just a couple of more things:
There is only one command line parameter in version 3.0, /D<path>
for the path to your drop file. If you were using the /N parameter for the
node number in version 2.0, you should eliminate that.
Traveller's checks will be worth ten times as much as they were.
Players who have stocked up on traveller's checks will be well off.
Installing Evangelist Wars:
If you are reading this, congratulations on figuring out how to
unzip the distribution files. Hopefully you have put them in a unique
directory. If not, please do so now.
If you are running the game under DOS, you will need to have
share.exe loaded. Any BBS should have this done already, but if yours
does not, all you need to do is add
SHARE
to your autoexec.bat file and either reboot or just type SHARE to load it
the first time. For OS/2 or WIN95, this is unnecessary.
If you are using non-standard IRQs without a fossil, you may
need to edit the file "door.cfg" for your system.
Important! Run reset.exe first. This initializes a new game or resets
an existing game, and creates files that the game must have to run.
If you can't wait to see this game, just type EVANG and it will
run locally with the sample door.sys file provided. Evangelist Wars runs
locally when the comport and baud rate are set to 0 in the drop file. Most
BBS software will write it this way when you are on locally.
Set up your BBS or mailer to run the file "ewmaint.exe" during
your nightly maintenance event. Callers should not be allowed in the game
while maintenance is being performed, as this would cause them to lose a
turn.
Either write a batch file to copy your drop file into the
Evangelist Wars directory and run EVANG.EXE or use the /d parameter to
pass the drop file path as follows:
EVANG /DC:\BBS\DROPFILE\DOOR.SYS
where \BBS\DROPFILE is the directory your BBS puts drop files into. Evangelist
wars will accept door.sys, dorinfo1.def, and most other popular drop file
types. For OS/2 systems, you may have to use a .cmd file rather than
a batch file, but the file content is the same.
See your BBS docs for info on setting up doors. Your BBS should
write the drop file you have specified and then run the .bat or .cmd file.
Special note to Maximus/2 users:
You will need to use a .cmd file to run Evang under Maximus/2. To
run the .cmd file, use xtern_run or xtern_dos and give the .cmd file name
without the file extension. An example follows, assuming your .cmd file is
named evang.cmd:
NoDsp Display_file misc\doorsys Disgrace "E"
Xtern_run evang Disgrace "Evangelist Wars"
Multinode Proboard setup (courtesy of Kitt Brown 1:133/3003)
To run the game:
*ZEVANG.BAT *D *#
The batch file:
CD\DOORS\EW
EVANG /DC:\PB\NODE%1\DOOR.SYS
CD\PB\NODE%1
Ghost Players:
Evangelist Wars 3.0 contains new interactive features for
multinode systems. If the BBS machine should crash while a player is
on, that player may become a "ghost player" who shows up but isn't
actually in the game. This will not cause any problems, and the
nightly maintenance program will remove ghosts for you. Just make
sure that no players are on while maintenance runs.
Hopefully this will get the game up and running for you. If you
have any questions, please netmail or call the support BBS listed above, or
leave a message in the Fidonet DOORWARE echo.
